A lot of people don't know about this man and I wanted to help change that. I saw the movie "Talk to Me" and that made me interested in learning more about this man. So I did my research and found out that he was responsible for the success of a lot of people including Howard Stern, James Brown (the NFL Commentator), and many others. I was little skeptical on releasing this album because of the messages on it. When race and politics are mentioned especially in a song, people tend to turn their ear the other way. However, I been greatly surprised at the love I've been getting. To those that supported and lended their ear to the project, you are greatly appreciated. Mr. Magic, real name John Rivas, (died October 2, 2009), an important figure in the world of hip hop radio, debuted in 1983 on WBLS-FM in New York City with the first exclusive rap radio show to be aired on a major station. Billing itself as Rap Attack, Magic's show featured Marley Marl as the DJ and Tyrone "Fly Ty" Williams as the show's co-producer. Magic's reign on the New York City airwaves lasted six years and was instrumental in broadening the scope and validity of hip-hop music.[1]
During the mid-80s there was a rivalry between Mr. Magic and Kool DJ Red Alert, who hosted a weekly show on WRKS-FM. The feud also played out between proxy rap groups, the Juice Crew and Boogie Down Productions (see The Bridge Wars). The Juice Crew - headed by Mr. Magic's on-air assistant, DJ Marley Marl - was named after one of Magic's aliases, "Sir Juice."[2]
As confirmed by DJ Premier, Mr. Magic died on the morning of October 2, 2009 from a heart attack.

Stepping in the studio with my mans Antagonist after a 6 year hiatus felt good. The last time we did a track together was in the now defunct BeatMarket studios in 2002. I was in my 'screaming on the mic' stage as a emcee and I took that same style with this new joint. I just wanted to reminisce a little.

When he called me in the studio, I wasn't expecting anything at all. Tag had a beat ready and was like what's up, so I pulled out my notebook and started writing. I damn near finished my part when Tag said he another beat he did earlier. I said play that shit, and the first time I heard it I was like lets use that one. It was that easy. We both felt the final turnout and decided that we got more tracks to bang out....

Sometimes it's the one-off experiments that can be the most interesting. Without the pressure of creating a "real" album, artists can open themselves up to more spontaneity, experimentalism, and avenues they wouldn't normally take on a proper project.

And so it is for the this second Sub Soul compilation presented by 4lux head honcho Gerd. On this second volume some artists, like Josip, The Astronotes, GrandEar, Milez Benjiman, OlivierDaySoul, Stevo, return with dope songs and beats. Artists like Cy Tru and iisiJii debut on the series with mindblowing music.

This is a soulful and sometimes a schizo-phrenetic, jumpy/smooth, anxious/relaxing set of tracks, rocking you back and forth, in and out of your comfort zone, challenging your ears and your attention span at every step. It's complex and mathematical in some parts, smooth and flowing in others. It never really settles in one place for too long.

It's seventeen songs. If they can't snatch you from the jaws of complacency, then you might be beyond hope.

Sub Soul 2 provides great tracks for using your MP3 player on shuffle - each one is it's own little gem of a short musical daydream. You get an interesting audio blurb of a surreal soundscape before you go back to a conventional song in your playlist. Call it diversity enhancement!
